Certain Army captains who agree to stay in the Army past their normal date of separation are being offered a "menu of incentives" if they agree to stay in. The incentives include the choice of a lump-sum cash bonus, attendance at a fully funded graduate school, or an option to attend the Defense Language Institute and learn a foreign language.

The Marines are also offering a College Loan Repayment Program for new officers who join the Marine Corps Selected Reserves. Under this new program, 100 percent of of the officer's qualifying student loan can be repaid, but the actual amount depends on how long the officer serves in the Selected Reserves without a break in service.

The program pays 15 percent or $500 (whichever is greater) of the outstanding loan balance for each year of completed service performed by the borrower, plus the amount of any interest that may accrue during the current year.
